Sydney Theatre Company has been a major force in Australian drama since its establishment in 1978. CEO and Artistic Director Robyn Nevin joined the company in mid-1999. Sydney Theatre Company operates out of its home venue, The Wharf, on Sydney's harbour, as well as Sydney Theatre, and the Drama Theatre, located at the Sydney Opera House.
In January 2004, STC opened its state of the art 850 seat theatre situated on the site of the old Bond Stores opposite Pier 6/7 on Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. Sydney Theatre is designed as a specialist drama and dance venue and provides the missing link between the Drama Theatre (seating 544) and Sydney's larger venues such as the Opera and Capitol Theatres. It offers Sydney Theatre Company the opportunity to expand the range of work it both produces and presents.
Its annual subscription season features up to twelve plays and while these productions are the core of Sydney Theatre Company's activities, its work reaches a variety of audiences in many different ways. STC regularly co-produces and tours its productions throughout Australia, playing annually to audiences in excess of 300,000.
In addition to its subscription season, Sydney Theatre Company runs Education and Writing programs and a major artform development stream, WHARF 2LOUD, offering an alternative to mainstage work.
